SKELETON LAKE | LARGEST ALPINE MEADOWS | PRESTINE LANDSCAPE | CHAUKHAMBA PEAK | HIMALAYAN MYSTERY
roopkund TREK
Nestled in the remote folds of Uttarakhand’s Garhwal Himalayas, the Roopkund Trek is a journey into mystery, history, and unparalleled natural beauty. Known as the “Skeleton Lake Trek,” Roopkund sits at a staggering altitude of 4,800 meters, its glacial waters reflecting the peaks that surround it. Beyond its breathtaking scenery, Roopkund is shrouded in legend, ancient skeletal remains found in the lake hint at mysterious events centuries ago, evoking curiosity, awe, and respect for the unforgiving Himalayan environment.
The trek begins from Tal village, a small settlement that acts as a gateway to high-altitude exploration. From here, the trail threads through dense oak and rhododendron forests, glacial streams, and cascading waterfalls, gradually ascending into alpine meadows and rugged mountain terrain. Villages like Bedni Bugyal and Ali Bugyal are both resting points and historical spaces, where generations of shepherds have grazed their flocks and pilgrims have paused on journeys to sacred Himalayan shrines.
Roopkund is not just a trek of physical endurance; it is a journey through time. The skeletal lake itself tells stories of historical expeditions, ancient trading routes, and pilgrimages. Folklore suggests that a catastrophic hailstorm claimed the lives of a group of pilgrims centuries ago, leaving behind the haunting remains that now emerge from beneath the snow each summer. Walking these trails is an immersion into both natural and human history, where each ridge, stream, and meadow carries whispers from the past.
The trek culminates at the surreal Roopkund Lake, surrounded by towering peaks such as Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and Chaukhamba. The lake’s icy waters, dotted with skeletons during summer, and the surrounding snowfields form a tableau that is both awe-inspiring and humbling. Here, the interplay of myth, history, and natural grandeur reaches its zenith, making the Roopkund Trek a transformative experience for adventurers, historians, and seekers alike.
Summary
The journey begins from Lohagunj (7,662 ft / 2,335 m), a quiet village nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas. From here, the trail gradually ascends through oak and rhododendron forests, crossing streams and quaint villages, and takes you to Didna Village (8,045 ft / 2,450 m) for the first night’s stay. The trail passes through Bedni Bugyal and Ghora Lotani, perfect spots to rest, acclimatize, and soak in the serene Himalayan landscapes.
The real highlight is the climb to Roopkund Lake (15,755 ft / 4,800 m), a glacial lake famous for the mysterious skeletal remains visible in August to October. The trek covers around 65 km round trip and usually takes 8 days, including the return journey to Lohajung and onward to Dehradun or Rishikesh. Dehradun/Hrishikesh to Lohajung
The trek begins with a long but scenic drive from Dehradun or Rishikesh to Lohajung, covering roughly 220 km and taking 10 to 12 hours on winding Himalayan roads. Trekkers depart early after breakfast and follow the Alaknanda and Pindar rivers, passing myth steeped towns like Devprayag, Karnaprayag and Tharali while the landscape shifts from plains to terraced fields and pine & birch forests. The road climbs steadily, offering frequent stops at roadside stalls for chai and short stretches to stretch and photograph the view; expect possible slowdowns from traffic or rough patches, so an early start is recommended. By late afternoon you arrive at Lohajung (7,662 ft / 2,335 m), a quiet village that serves as the base for the Roopkund trek and a last genuine touchpoint with village life. On arrival you meet your guide and support staff, complete gear checks, confirm porter and transport details, and get a full briefing of the days ahead.
