LARGEST ALPINE MEADOWS  |  PRESTINE LANDSCAPE  |  CHAUKHAMBA PEAK | HIMALAYAN MYSTERY

ali bedni bugyal TREK

Nestled amidst the heart of Uttarakhand’s Garhwal Himalayas, the Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek is a passage through rolling meadows, ancient myths, and the purest expressions of Himalayan beauty. Perched at an altitude of around 3,500 meters, Ali and Bedni Bugyal together form one of the largest alpine meadows in Asia, a vast emerald expanse that turns golden under the sun and glows under the gaze of the snow-clad Trishul and Nanda Ghunti peaks. Every step here feels like walking on nature’s own carpet, woven with wildflowers, soft grass, and the whispers of mountain winds.

The journey begins from the quaint village of Wan, a charming hamlet that marks the threshold to the high meadows. The trail ascends through ancient oak, pine, and rhododendron forests, alive with the songs of Himalayan birds and the scent of damp earth. As one climbs higher, the dense canopy gives way to open ridgelines, revealing breathtaking panoramas of the greater Himalayas. The twin meadows of Ali and Bedni unfold like living poetry, undulating grasslands cradled between towering peaks and cloud kissed horizons.

But Ali Bedni is more than a spectacle of beauty; it is a space of deep cultural resonance. Bedni Bugyal is steeped in spiritual lore, serving as an important stop on the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra, a sacred pilgrimage that retraces ancient Himalayan traditions. Local shepherds have long used these meadows as grazing grounds, their seasonal migrations weaving human stories into the landscape’s timeless rhythm.

At dawn, as the first light spills over Trishul’s icy summit, the meadows seem to awaken, the grass glistening with dew, the sky shifting through hues of rose and gold. Standing here, surrounded by silence and grandeur, one feels the pulse of the Himalayas, vast, eternal, and humbling. The Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek is not just a walk through alpine beauty; it is an immersion into serenity, myth, and the living soul of the mountains.

Summary

The journey to Ali Bedni Bugyal begins from Lohajung (7,662 ft / 2,335 m), a peaceful hamlet nestled amid the Garhwal Himalayas. From here, the trail winds through dense oak and rhododendron forests, crossing gurgling streams and small mountain settlements, gradually ascending to Didna Village (8,045 ft / 2,450 m) for the first night’s rest. The next day, the climb opens up to the sweeping alpine meadows of Ali Bugyal (11,320 ft / 3,450 m),  one of the largest and most picturesque grasslands in Asia, offering grand vistas of Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and Mrigthuni peaks shining against the horizon.

From Ali, the trail continues to Bedni Bugyal (11,686 ft / 3,565 m), a meadow of spiritual significance where a small Bedni Kund reflects the surrounding peaks and marks a halt for the Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra pilgrims. The entire trek spans around 32 km round trip and typically takes 4 to 5 days, including the return to Lohajung and onward travel to Rishikesh or Kathgodam. It is graded easy to moderate, making it ideal for beginners seeking a high-altitude experience. The best seasons are May–June and September–October, when the meadows are lush, skies clear, and the Himalayas in full view.

The Skeleton Lake Mystery: Skeletal remains, some dating back 600 to 1,000 years, are scattered across the lake. Scientific studies suggest a catastrophic hailstorm, while folklore attributes the deaths to divine punishment or curses.

Alpine Meadows: Bedni Bugyal and Ali Bugyal offer verdant pastures, wildflower carpets, and panoramic mountain vistas.

Himalayan Peaks: Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and Chaukhamba dominate the skyline, steeped in both natural majesty and mythological significance

Cultural Villages: Tal, Lamba Dhura, and Ghangaria preserve centuries-old Himalayan shepherding and pilgrim traditions.

Dehradun/Hrishikesh to Lohajung

The trek begins with a long but scenic drive from Dehradun or Rishikesh to Lohajung, covering roughly 220 km and taking 10 to 12 hours on winding Himalayan roads. Trekkers depart early after breakfast and follow the Alaknanda and Pindar rivers, passing myth steeped towns like Devprayag, Karnaprayag and Tharali while the landscape shifts from plains to terraced fields and pine & birch forests. The road climbs steadily, offering frequent stops at roadside stalls for chai and short stretches to stretch and photograph the view; expect possible slowdowns from traffic or rough patches, so an early start is recommended. By late afternoon you arrive at Lohajung (7,662 ft / 2,335 m), a quiet village that serves as the base for the Roopkund trek and a last genuine touchpoint with village life. On arrival you meet your guide and support staff, complete gear checks, confirm porter and transport details, and get a full briefing of the days ahead. Guesthouses in Lohajung are simple but warm; dinner, hot tea, and a chance to sample local food help you refuel and rest.

Didna Village to Kobal Tall via Ali Bugyal

From Didna Village to Khobal Tal via Ali Bugyal, trekkers cover 9–10 km, ascending from 8,045 ft to 11,300 ft, with the first half of the day steeply climbing through dense oak and rhododendron forests. Small streams and shaded rest points appear intermittently, offering moments to refresh and observe the thriving forest ecosystem. Emerging above the treeline, the landscape unfolds into the sweeping alpine expanse of Ali Bugyal, one of the most picturesque meadows in the region. The ascent eases here, following gentle undulating grassy slopes as trekkers traverse towards the hidden lake of Khobal Tal. The route passes traditional shepherd shelters and grazing grounds, revealing uninterrupted vistas of Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and Hathi Ghoda towering above the horizon. Khobal Tal, a tranquil high-altitude lake nestled amidst rolling meadows, makes for an ideal campsite, known for its mirror-like reflections of the peaks and its calm, meditative atmosphere.
